2017 Belas Selection Pinot Noir

91 points, Jeb Dunnuck

The Buena Vista Vinicultural Society was formed in 1863 by the winery's founder, Count Agoston Haraszthy, to further improve its winemaking prowess and expand its vineyards. The Vinicultural Society has been restored as a collection of unique small-production wines that honor the winerys pioneering spirit and contribution to California winemaking. The collection of wines explores clonal selections, varietals and the incredible terroir of Northern California.

Our 2017 Bela's Selection Pinot Noir opens with a bouquet of blackberries, plum and baking spices on the nose. On the palate this wine is layered with dark fruit flavors such as black cherries, blueberries, and a touch of freshly cracked black pepper. This wine is silky to the touch and perfectly balanced with bright acid and firm tannins.

Named for Count Haraszthys youngest son, Belas Selection Pinot Noir hails primarily from two vineyards, Starkey and Goodin, in the Sebastopol Hills area of the Russian River Valley. Starkey Vineyard is planted to 30+ year-old vines and includes clones 23, 828 and Pommard. Goodin Vineyard is located in the southeastern hills of the Russian River Valley which is ideal for growing Pinot Noir grapes. Once harvested, the whole berries were basket pressed and fermented with native yeast in small open-top oak vats with hand punchdowns. The wine was aged for 15 months in 100% French oak barrels, 10% new oak.
