2021 Chateau Buena Vista Stag's Leap Cabernet Sauvignon

In 1861, our founder, Count Haraszthy, journeyed to Europe to procure the finest grapevines. While in Bordeaux, he declared Cabernet Sauvignon is its unsurpassed grape. The wine made of it possesses splendid color and an exquisite bouquet. Bringing choice cuttings back to California, he propagated them at Buena Vista and sold thousands to those that founded the Napa Valley wine world. We celebrate Buena Vistas historic contribution to Napa wine by offering this rich and velvety Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon.

Dressed in a deep, lustrous garnet, it greets the nose with an enticing medley of blackberries, dark cherries, and a subtle touch of cedar. The palate is a harmonious fusion of opulent fruit, where succulent black currants and plums intertwine with nuances of dark chocolate and hints of dried herbs, all elegantly supported by supple tannins and a refined structure. The finish is a lingering masterpiece, graced by echoes of vanilla and a whisper of earthiness that encapsulates the vineyard's terroir.

2021 was a smooth and uneventful harvest season. June started out warm, followed by a cool and foggy July and August that slowed ripening and caused nice retention of acidity. Even ripening, with no extreme heat events, made for ideal growing conditions. Sparse winter rains resulted in an early budbreak, evenly developed clusters, and smaller berries packed full of flavor. Overall, the fruit was exceptional, making it another amazing year for quality.

The grapes for this Appellation Series Cabernet Sauvignon, Stags Leap were hand harvested on October 11 before being fermented in open top fermenters and aged in 20% new French oak barrels for 55 months before being bottled unfiltered.
